Extended writing examples in AQA A-Level PE

This post is for all teachers and, I hope, students of AQA A-level PE. I want to specifically focus on the art that is extended writing for Paper 1 and Paper 2 and provide a series of ideas and examples that I believe will improve the tendency for students to acquire marks.

In recent weeks, I have posted equivalent blogs for:

AQA GCSE PE

Edexcel GCSE PE

OCR GCSE PE

OCR A-level PE

Extended writing in AQA A-level PE is phenomenally important. If you look at this table, AQA is, by far, the course that features the largest proportion of extended writing:

Exam board for A-level PE Extended writing marks available per Exam Paper as of Summer 2024
Paper 1 Paper 2 Paper 3 Total % of overall exam marks
AQA 69 69 N/A 138 66%
Edexcel 70 60 N/A 130 54%
OCR 20 10 10 40 19%

66% of all AQA A-level PE exam marks come from extended writing and this is because extended writing on the course works like this:

  Section A

Section B

Section C

Paper 1 1 x 8-marker 1 x 8-marker 1 x 8-marker
1 x 15-marker

1 x 15-marker

1 x 15-marker

Paper 2 1 x 8-marker 1 x 8-marker 1 x 8-marker
1 x 15-marker

1 x 15-marker

1 x 15-marker

Furthermore, three of 12 extended writing pieces per year are synoptic which means that students need to incorporate ideas from more than one section of the course.

What is included in the pack?

The pack below contains 39 pages of writing frameworks, example questions, example mark schemes and example answers. It is a phenomenal resource for any AQA A-level PE teacher and, by extension, student. Please download it freely.
