Extended writing examples for your GCSE PE Course - Part 2 Edexcel GCSE PE

After a really successful post last week on extended writing examples for AQA GCSE PE, I’m following up this week with an equivalent set of resources for Edexcel GCSE PE. Before I prompt you to download the resources, I want to make a couple of observations about Edexcel GCSE PE. Sadly, the course has seen dramatic decline since 2016 (see here for my blog post on "Changes to Edexcel GCSE PE Exams - Will this arrest the slump?"). There are approximately ⅓ of the students taking the course compared to ten years ago. Edexcel has tried to respond to this decline by restructuring aspects of their qualification such as being clearer on the PEP coursework and reducing the amount of extended writing by 50%. However, serious doubts remain about the course and both AQA and OCR GCSE PE are experiencing more positive trends in cohorts.

In my opinion, one of the reasons for this is the highly specific way that Edexcel structures its extended writing mark schemes. Whilst the questions themselves, broadly, are of reasonable quality (reasonable does not mean good!), I interpret the mark schemes as so specific and narrow that a broad range of students will struggle to access them. Now, I have no problem with tough questions! That’s fine. But what cannot be agreed upon is that mark schemes are tough in relation to the question. This is what I perceive with Edexcel.

So, with all this in mind, I want to provide some examples of Edexcel GCSE PE extended planning and writing. The document that you can download below is very comprehensive. It includes questions, mark schemes, planning documents and answers for two extended writing pieces. They are completely free and are designed as learning resources for BOTH students and teachers.

**This post is most relevant to teachers and students of Edexcel GCSE PE 9-1.**
