CUB: The question-processing routine - Teachers' Guide

CUB (Circle, Underline, Box) is a simple yet effective exam revision and writing routine giving PE and Sport students a clear, repeatable student strategy for every question. (Read the bull blog post here.)

CUB starts by circling the command words and adding a short translation (e.g. Analyse → “break into parts and explain”) so students know exactly how to respond. Next, they underline the topic and any constraint (performer, group, context, number or purpose) to avoid vague, generic writing. Finally, they box the marks and add a 3–5 word plan (for ideas and depth), turning every question into a structured exam answer rather than a guess.

The purpose of CUB is to give PE and Sport students a simple, metacognitive student strategy for processing every exam question before they start writing. By circling command words and translating them, underlining the topic and constraints, and boxing the marks with a brief plan, CUB helps students understand exam demands, avoid generic answers, and structure their exam revision and writing so responses match what the mark scheme actually rewards.
