The power of The EverLearner is in its simplicity. From the outset, the data available to teaching staff via the dashboard is informative, fast and intuitive to use. Here at Epsom College we have immersed The EverLearner into teaching through flipped and blended learning, and as a regular formative assessment tool alongside teacher explanation and modelling. The in-depth video lessons, often 5 to 10 minutes in length, allow students to learn at their own pace, clarify knowledge taught to them previously or check in to specific sections identified as knowledge gaps from The EverLearner data.

“The power of The EverLearner is in its simplicity. From the outset, the data available to teaching staff via the dashboard is informative, fast and intuitive to use.”

At Epsom College, the teaching and learning mantra is that ‘knowledge must precede skill’; without doubt, The EverLearner assists students on their path to mastery. To aid the consolidation of content, students can make personal detailed notes on the video lessons and can then use these, in an aptly called ‘practice mode’, to attempt test questions with confidence. For a more realistic challenge, pupils can then engage in deliberate practice by attempting the relevant chapter checkpoint questions providing an assessment opportunity without the open access to their notes. Throughout, teachers verbally develop a culture of excellence by provoking students to think about how they can offer more detailed answers to well produced exam-style questions; aided by the feedback and review function built into both the test mode and checkpoint sections of The EverLearner. The development of independence comes naturally as students explore The EverLearner’s content. At Epsom College, we have found that students accelerate through subject content with this degree of freedom, alongside the setting of compulsory prep/homework via The EverLearner’s comprehensive assignment module. A final gem is the built-in messaging service, which offers students and teachers alike the opportunity to promote discussions around specific subject knowledge, either as a group or as individuals.

“Students in GCSE and A-level PE have become more astute at knowledge-gap identification, assisted by data generated from the test mode and checkpoints which can help target their revision.”

Undoubtedly, the use of The EverLearner has had an impact on our teaching and learning. Students in GCSE and A-level PE have become more astute at knowledge gap identification, assisted by data generated from the test mode and checkpoints, which can help target their revision. Differentiation both in and outside of the classroom is a seamless proposition, with the ability to create challenging and appropriate individual learning pathways, often self-driven and initiated. The transition from copy/learn student note taking, to utilising each student’s iPad, PC or smart phone has been a smooth process, with teachers developing into assured facilitators with unquestionable subject knowledge, there to scaffold, challenge and promote growth.

Students make excellent use of The EverLearner as an online platform and we have also made strides towards using it as part of a fully-blended learning experience.

“The EverLearner has been highly beneficial to me. I like being able to walk into the room already knowing what I want to do. Having the ability to get feedback in an instant is very helpful and having the teacher moving around the room giving personalised feedback is amazing.” Ed Gibbins (U6 student)

We use all of the features of The EverLearner in class and students carry this behavior on at home. It is not used in every lesson but the blended learning stations are always available to the pupils. The pupils like the freedom of movement and, once practised, it is very well received. We use it as a group and students use it as individuals both in class and at home. A school-wide focus is to develop self-motivated learners and individualised learning; The EverLearner is central to us facilitating this.

At GCSE, the biggest impact has been on our grades with candidates who found the pace of the typical classroom to be too fast. The EverLearner has given these pupils the chance to revisit areas they are less confident in and receive more specific feedback from teachers.

“The EverLearner has given pupils the chance to revisit areas they are less confident in and receive more specific feedback from teachers.”

At A Level, it has facilitated pupils in their independent learning, especially those who have other A Levels that link (Physics with Biomechanics). Rather than re-covering theory they have already studied and have a strong grasp of, they can move on and revisit other areas where they are less confident. In the near future, we will be introducing blended learning to our girls’ school through our co-teaching partnership. The EverLearner will sit at the centre of this development. The new Dashboard will help with live tracking and highlight areas of weakness to be addressed.

  • Spaced and interleaved practice
  • Improved information retrieval
  • Revisiting of early-stage content prior to exams

At Itchen, we use the test mode and checkpoint assignments to help with spaced practice and the retrieval of core learning. This enables our learners to engage with recently learned and more distant material throughout the course.

“The EverLearner really seems to have helped with students’ retrieval of key information.”

On our A-level course, students benefit from returning to previous learning and, crucially, they gain confidence in what they’re learning now because their foundation is so strong. The EverLearner really seems to have helped with students’ retrieval of key information. This makes it easier for me as the teacher (as well as the wider team), to ensure that students are retrieving content from 1st year as well as from the 2nd year material.

We can track the scores from the 1st year content and easily work out which topics need re-visiting as a priority in revision sessions. The EverLearner was used heavily during revision prior to A-level PE exams. Tutorials were set for students who missed lessons and both practice and test mode were used for retrieval practice.

  • Improved ALPs grade
  • Reduced staff workload
  • Improved student outcomes

The EverLearner has had a huge impact on our entire team. We have all re-evaluated the way in which we teach both theory and practical, and we have taken forward some or all of the aspects of the The EverLearner model. Our ALPs thermometer grading in the last 18 months has risen dramatically and we are now firmly amongst the top performing subjects in our very academic and high performing school.

“Our ALPs thermometer grading in the last 18 months has risen dramatically.”

The research-based INSET has really challenged staff to think about the impact of teaching and learning on all of our youngsters. The EverLearner as a tool has allowed my staff to get alongside pupils and it has reduced staff workload, whilst impacting learning outcomes in a positive manner.

In the near future, we are hoping to roll it out school-wide and use it to encourage staff CPD.

  • Reduced teacher workload
  • Flipped learning
  • Personalised learning

At Esher, we use The EverLearner tutorials for flipped learning, as well as practice and test mode for homework. We also benefit a great deal from the automated assignment setting, which significantly reduces teacher workload.

“The Everlearner allows us to review what we've studied in class, so we can develop a deeper understanding that will stay with us until exam time” Callum (year 13 student).

As a tool, The EverLearner allows our students to develop a far greater understanding prior to classroom lessons and this enables lesson time to incorporate far more complex tasks or retrieval opportunities than would otherwise be the case. Importantly though, The EverLearner is also allowing us to develop a more blended-learning approach in the classroom and this promotes the idea of self-paced learning by students. This has become a real advantage, not least as students approach formal exams.

  • Reduced teacher workload
  • Increased student engagement
  • Improved assessment accuracy

The EverLearner has helped students to consolidate much of the factual learning outside the classroom, allowing for more time to develop understanding and application in lesson time. Lessons have become more interactive, engaging and dynamic because the delivery of content and the repetitive learning of facts is set as homework to be completed prior to the lesson.

“The EverLearner has helped students to consolidate much of the factual learning outside the classroom.”

The students have become more engaged and they especially enjoy taking the tutorials and test mode prior to lessons. Checkpoints at the appropriate points help to confirm teacher judgements about student progress and the ability to set checkpoints quickly and easily saves teachers so much time.

“The ability to set checkpoints quickly and easily saves teachers so much time.”

In the future we will be introducing The EverLearner to AS Level PE and we will gladly share the platform with colleagues as the content expands to cover a broader curriculum.

Our classes use the majority of the features within The EverLearner as part of the EverLearner classroom. The tutorials help the students consolidate knowledge that they have developed in other areas. They use the note-taking facility whilst watching and listening to the tutorials. The different modes of questioning enable learners to assess their own knowledge and identify strengths and weaknesses for themselves.

“Previously, students would struggle to meet their target grades but they are now exceeding them.”

Due to the change of format in lessons, student performance has increased. Previously, students would struggle to meet their target grades but they are now exceeding them. Previously, students would often struggle to retain knowledge but now they are able to recall information more readily due to the website, the classroom model and due to knowledge retrieval activities used within the classroom. Grades have significantly improved in Paper 1 of GCSE PE. Grades have sustained in Paper 2.

“Grades have significantly improved in Paper 1.”

The behaviours of students have also been challenged. Students have some experience of using flipped learning resources by the time they enter KS4, so this aspect does not come as a surprise. However, their resilience as students has been greatly enhanced by using The EverLearner and now learners never settle for mediocrity. All students aim for the highest levels of performance.
